421 - Internal Resorption of Primary Teeth: A Potential Indicator of Systemic Disease

Abstract: Internal resorption of primary teeth can occur due to several reasons, including trauma, infection, or underlying systemic disease. This case report describes an 8-year-old girl who was referred to the University of Michigan Pediatric Dentistry Clinic by her general dentist. The patient presented extensive internal resorption affecting all primary molars, with no complaints of pain, trauma or other systemic symptoms. Our findings and concerns were communicated to the patient’s physician, and she was then referred for blood testing. The results were abnormal, including low ferritin levels and elevated antinuclear antibody (ANA) titers. The patient is currently undergoing testing for autoimmune conditions. This case demonstrates the importance of comprehensive investigation in patients presenting with atypical patterns of internal resorption and highlights the essential role of interprofessional collaboration in optimizing patient care.
