84 - Variables that Influence Water Consumption Practices in New York City

Abstract:

Purpose: New York City has community water fluoridation. However, half of our patients report
drinking bottled water. The aim of this study is to explore the reasons for families’ water choices.

Methods: A questionnaire to evaluate variables that affect drinking water choices was developed,
tested, and implemented with parents in an interview style in English and Spanish. Simple and
relative absolute frequencies were calculated for all variables. Statistical analysis was done using chi-
square and Fisher’s exact tests. Open-ended questions were analyzed qualitatively.

Results: A total of 335 parents participated (58% Hispanic). 78% of children had experienced
decay. 47% of children drank water from the tap and 53% did not. 70% of parents cited safety/health
as the main reason for their choice, 19% cited taste and 22% other reasons. Among Spanish-speaking
parents, children were more likely to drink tap water at home when the parent had grown up drinking
tap water themselves (P < .01). Other variables like parental education level, region of origin or child
caries experience, showed no significant association with the child’s tapwater consumption. 47% of
parents were NOT aware that NYC water is fluoridated, and 76% of parents would be willing to
change the water they use if it improved their child’s oral health. This willingness was not significantly
associated with education or ethnicity. Many parents had no clear understanding of the role of fluoride
in caries prevention.

Conclusions: Education about drinking water and caries prevention should be included as part of a
comprehensive caries management plan.
