Juliana Balbinot Hilgert, PhD, DDS, is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) Graduate Program in Dentistry, Porto Alegre, Brazil.
With a PhD (2008) and MSc (2004) in Epidemiology from UFRGS, and DDS (1999) from the same institution, Dr. Hilgert has over 20 years of expertise in oral epidemiology, public health dentistry, and health services research. Her career includes tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at UFRGS since 2010, where she served as Director (2021-2023) and Vice-Director (2011-2013) of the Graduate Program in Epidemiology. She has been a member of UFRGS's Research Ethics Committee from 2021-2024.
Dr. Hilgert's research focuses on oral health inequalities, aging, frailty, and primary care access. She has authored 150+ peer-reviewed publications in journals including Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology and Gerodontology.
An Associate Editor for BMC Oral Health and BMC Public Health, and Editorial Board Member for Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology and European Journal of Oral Sciences, Dr. Hilgert has supervised 20+ MSc/PhD students to completion and served on numerous defense panels. Her international experience includes visiting researcher roles at NIH/NIA (2005), University of Illinois at Chicago (2006-2007), and University of Washington (2019-2020).
