76 - Success of Posterior Restorative Dental Treatments Completed Under Oral Conscious Sedation

Abstract:

Purpose: Dental caries is highly prevalent in preschool-aged children and often requires advanced behavior management due to dental anxiety. Oral conscious sedation (OCS) is commonly used to facilitate dental treatment in this population; however, retreatment rates remain a concern given the risks associated with sedation. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of posterior interproximal restorations in primary teeth completed under OCS and to assess how restorative modality and material choice influence treatment success.

Methods: A retrospective chart review will be conducted of children aged 3–6 years who received posterior restorative treatment under OCS at Montefiore Medical Center between July 2022 and January 2025 and returned for follow-up with radiographs within approximately one year. Eligible teeth included posterior primary teeth with interproximal dentinal caries not involving the pulp. Data extracted from electronic health records include patient age, restorative modality and material, and radiographic findings. Treatment success was defined as an asymptomatic tooth without periapical or furcation pathology and no retreatment within one year. Descriptive statistics and generalized estimating equations will be used to calculate success rates and assess associations between restorative modality and outcomes.

Results: Upon compilation of the data, statistical analysis will be performed to determine the success rate of dental treatment for interproximal caries in OCS.

Conclusion: This study will provide clinically relevant data on the success of posterior restorative treatments completed under OCS in young pediatric patients.
