215 - The Amnestic Effects of Midazolam When Used for Moderate Sedation

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the amnestic effects of midazolam when used for moderate sedation of pediatric patients undergoing dental treatment.

Methods: Sixty ASA I and II children aged 3 to10 years were recruited at the UTHealth Houston Pediatric Dentistry Graduate clinic. The study group consisted of patients who received dental treatment with moderate sedation using midazolam. The control group consisted of patients who received routine exams without dental treatment or sedation. Patients in both groups were asked to identify photo cards at set time intervals in relation to administration of the sedation medication. Patients and their caregivers were interviewed on the day of treatment with a post-operative phone call.

Results: There were significant differences in the photo card recall rates of photos 3 (P <0.001), 4 (P <0.001), and 5 (P <0.001) between the control and test groups. Significant differences were noted in photo recall rates within the test group for photos 1 (P = <0.001, <.001), 2 (P = .002, <.001), and 3 (P = .01), versus photos 4 and 5. Children were able to recall events prior to receiving the sedation medication but not events performed during the sedation. Factors found to affect the recall rate within the test group were the level of sedation and the sedation regimen used.

Conclusions: Amnestic effects were observed based on photo recall in patients receiving midazolam for moderate sedation and these effects significantly increased as time progressed from the start of sedation.
