Dr. Dayl T. Chachappan, BDS, MPH, is a pediatric dental resident at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry with a background in clinical dentistry, public health, and research. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), India, followed by Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2016. She then completed advanced training in restorative dentistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2021.
Dr. Chachappan practiced as a general dentist for two years in federally qualified health centers in California, providing care to underserved populations and gaining experience in managing pediatric patients within public health systems. These experiences informed her decision to pursue specialty training in pediatric dentistry.
Her research focuses on improving diagnostic decision-making in pediatric dentistry through artificial intelligence. She is the principal investigator of CarioNet, a multi-phase study modeling proximal caries progression using longitudinal bitewing radiographs to support risk-based, minimally invasive care. Her scholarly work includes publications in cardiovascular epidemiology examining LDL cholesterol and statin-associated symptoms through the REGARDS study and in dental research, including work on pulp vitality testing in the Indian Journal of Oral Sciences.
Dr. Chachappan aims to combine private practice with academia, contributing to both patient care and dental education.
