SCOTT L. TOMAR, DMD, MPH, DrPH
Dr. Scott Tomar is Professor and Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry, where he also serves as Head of the Department of Population Oral Health and Affiliate Professor in the UIC School of Public Health. He currently serves as the spokesperson on community water fluoridation for the American Dental Association (ADA) and serves on the ADA’s National Fluoridation Advisory Committee and the Dental Quality Alliance’s Measure Development and Maintenance Committee.
Dr. Tomar has published about 200 journal articles and book chapters and contributed to seven reports of the US Surgeon General. He is a former editor of Journal of Public Health Dentistry and Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice and has served as President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the American Board of Dental Public Health, The American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Oral Health Section, and the International Association for Dental Research’s (IADR) Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Group. Dr. Tomar has received numerous awards, including the IADR’s H. Trendley Dean Distinguished Scientist Award and the APHA’s John W. Knutson Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Tomar received his BA and DMD degrees from Temple University, MPH degree from Columbia University, and certificate in Dental Public Health and DrPH degree in Oral Epidemiology from The University of Michigan. Dr. Tomar served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
