Dr. Ji Min Yochim, DDS, MS, PhD, is a pediatric dentist, educator, and researcher, serving as a faculty member and Research Director of the Advanced Pediatric Dentistry Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Her career reflects both entrepreneurial initiative and academic leadership, shaped by experiences in private practice, clinical education, and research. Early in her career, she worked as an associate while teaching as a part-time faculty member, and later built a private pediatric dental practice from the ground up before transitioning fully into academia.
As Research Director, Dr. Yochim mentors pediatric dental residents in developing meaningful research projects and guides them through the publication process. She is passionate about fostering scientific thinking and helping residents translate evidence into clinical practice. With a PhD in Translational Science, her work focuses on bridging the gap between scientific discovery and practical patient care.
Dr. Yochim’s clinical and scholarly interests emphasize a holistic and preventive approach to children’s oral health. She studies the relationship between breathing patterns, tongue function (myofunctional therapy), and frenectomy in supporting healthy craniofacial growth and development. She believes early identification and interdisciplinary collaboration are key to promoting lifelong oral and overall health.
In addition to her teaching and research roles, Dr. Yochim contributes to the profession as a peer reviewer and has served as a research judge for the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry Conference since 2023. She is also committed to expanding preventive care for underserved communities and children with special health care needs, striving to translate science into practical strategies that help children grow, thrive, and achieve optimal oral health.
