Abstract: Lifespan of Chairside Unilateral Band and Loop Space Maintainers

Purpose:
The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the clinical lifespan and failure patterns of chairside fabricated unilateral band and loop space maintainers placed in pediatric dental patients. The secondary objective of this study is to assess factors associated with appliance longevity and to identify the most common causes of premature failure.

Methods:
A retrospective chart review was conducted of pediatric patients who received a chairside fabricated unilateral band and loop space maintainer at Montefiore Pediatric Dentistry between July 2021 and June 2023. Appliances were fabricated by pediatric dental residents and cemented with glass ionomer cement. Records were reviewed through January 2026. Data collected included patient age, arch and side of placement, duration of appliance survival, and reason for removal. Appliance longevity will be evaluated using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, with removals due to clinical indication treated as censored observations.

Results:
Final data pending.

Conclusions:
This study will provide clinically relevant information regarding the longevity and failure characteristics of chairside fabricated unilateral band and loop space maintainers. Findings may help improve clinical decision-making and space maintenance protocols in pediatric dentistry.
