71 - Assessing the Success of Single-Surface SMART Restorations in Primary Teeth

Abstract:

Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the clinical success of Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) restorations in primary teeth, particularly those of single surfaces.

Methods: A single reviewer will collect data from the electronic health record (Epic Systems) used at the four clinics at Montefiore Pediatric Dentistry clinics. Primary teeth treated with SDF followed by restorations from 2020 to 2025 will be reviewed and documented. Follow up visits will be reviewed to be categorized into 1) success and 2) failure outcomes. SDF code CDT D1354 and restoration codes D2330 (1 surface anterior) and D2391(1 surface posterior) were used for data collection.

Results: 89 patients received SDF followed by restorative treatment within one month; 26 primary teeth from 12 patients met the inclusion criteria. Of the teeth treated with SMART restorations, 14 failed within the 2-year follow-up period, 5 were successful, and 7 were lost to follow-up.

Conclusion: SMART restorations in primary teeth showed a relatively high failure rate over a 2-year period, with failures occurring at variable time points and only a small proportion remaining successful. Interpretation is limited by small sample size and loss to follow-up. Further studies with larger cohorts, standardized protocols, and improved follow-up are needed to better assess long-term effectiveness.
