386 - Evaluation of "Mini-Dental School: Explorations in Dental Medicine" Pre-College Program

Abstract:

Purpose: This study evaluated the “Mini-Dental School: Explorations in Dental Medicine,” a unique one-week pre-college summer program at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). Designed to help high-school-aged students envision careers in dental medicine, the program’s effectiveness as a professional pathway was assessed for the first time using the 2025 cohort.

Methods: The curriculum, delivered by faculty and dental students, combined educational workshops with hands-on clinical experiences. Activities included suturing, impression-making, cavity fillings, plaque removal, and simulated patient cases. Students also engaged with the TUSDM admissions office, attended dental student panels, and completed a capstone project presenting innovative healthcare ideas. Evaluation was conducted through anonymous pre- and post-program Qualtrics surveys.

Results: Data from the 2025 participants (n=44) revealed that 88% had never attended a pre-dental program. Results indicated high satisfaction, with 96% of students extremely satisfied and 78% likely to recommend the program. Key favorites included the keynote speaker (92%) and clinical tasks like cavity fillings (89%). The program significantly enhanced student perceptions and skills. Nearly all participants (98%) reported a better understanding of oral healthcare, interprofessional collaboration, and hands-on experience. Notably, 100% of students reported growth in ethical reflection, academic pathway identification, and collaboration. Furthermore, 97% felt confident demonstrating clinical skills like radiographic interpretation and suturing.

Conclusions: Findings suggest that early immersive exposure through programs like the Mini-Dental School strengthens the pipeline of future dental applicants. By increasing knowledge, interest, and confidence, this initiative serves as a vital tool for inspiring the next generation of dental professionals.
