74 - Provider Perspectives on Local Anesthesia for Mandibular Primary Molar Extractions

Abstract:

Purpose:

Effective pain control during dental extractions is essential in pediatric dentistry, as painful experiences may contribute to dental anxiety and reduced cooperation in future care. Multiple local anesthesia techniques are available, including inferior alveolar nerve block, articaine infiltration, and computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery. This study aims to characterize provider preferences for local anesthesia delivery techniques and identify factors influencing clinical decision-making for extractions of non-abscessed mandibular primary molars




Methods:

This cross-sectional survey study will be conducted among active members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, including pediatric dentists and pediatric dental residents. A 12-question electronic survey will be sent out to participants. We will assess preferred anesthetic technique and delivery method, as well as whether years in practice, practice setting, training and experience with computer-controlled delivery systems, concerns regarding patient comfort, and risk of postoperative soft-tissue injury influence the decision for local anesthetic delivery technique. Associations between provider characteristics and anesthetic preferences will be explored using chi-square analyses, with proportions and 95% confidence intervals reported where applicable.




Results:

Data collection is ongoing. Final data analysis will be completed prior to presentation.




Conclusions:

This study aims to describe current practice patterns and factors influencing pediatric dentists’ selection of local anesthesia techniques for mandibular primary molar extractions. Findings may help identify trends related to training, experience, and practice setting, and may inform future educational initiatives aimed at optimizing pain control and patient comfort.
