382 - Survey on the Use of Screening Questionnaires for Sleep Apnea in Pediatric Dentistry

The aim of this study was to evaluate current practices, familiarity, attitudes, and perceived barriers related to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screening among pediatric dentists in the United States. This descriptive, cross-sectional study used an online survey distributed to active members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). The survey assessed screening practices, use of validated screening questionnaires, attitudes toward OSA screening, and perceived barriers to implementation.

Descriptive statistics were used to summarize survey responses, and associations between provider characteristics and screening practices were analyzed. A total of 182 pediatric dentists completed the survey. Screening frequency significantly differed by board certification status, and perception of OSA screening as outside the scope of practice significantly differed by years in practice. Although most respondents reported screening for OSA, only 26.6% reported using validated screening questionnaires.

This study highlights variability in OSA screening practices and identifies gaps in the use of standardized screening tools. Findings may inform targeted educational efforts, clinical tools, and interdisciplinary strategies to improve early identification and referral of pediatric patients at risk for OSA.
