110 - The Most Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies at NYU Langone- Brooklyn: An Analysis of Walk-In Emergencies

Abstract:

Purpose: This study aimed to characterize pediatric dental emergency visits by age, dental home status, visit patterns, chief complaints, and treatments rendered.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted of 369 pediatric dental emergency visits coded as D0140 at NYU Langone Brooklyn between January 1, 2025, and July 1, 2025 using EPIC.

Results: Pain without infection was the most common chief complaint (172 visits, 46.6%), particularly among school-aged children aged 6–12 years. Most walk-in visits were from patients of record (228/369), indicating the majority of children presenting for emergencies had an established dental home at NYU Langone. Outside referrals accounted for 9.2% of visits (34 patients) and were most often for specialty services, including endodontics. Recurrent walk-in visits were identified in 36 patients (9.8%). The recurrent emergencies were largely associated with difficulties maintaining continuity of care, including missed appointments and prolonged gaps in treatment. These patients demonstrated high no-show rates (30–60%). A smaller subset of recurrent walk-ins were general anesthesia waitlist patients who were difficult to contact or did not maintain regular recall visits. Extractions were the most common treatment rendered for both pain-with infection (55.2%) and pain-without infection (35.5%) categories.

Conclusion: Understanding patterns of pediatric dental emergency utilization highlights opportunities to improve care coordination, reinforce recall compliance, and enhance follow-up systems, particularly for patients with identified care gaps or on general anesthesia waitlists. Limitations: This study reflects a six-month period at a single site, excludes off-site locations, off-hour emergencies, and walk-ins coded under alternative visit codes.
