Abstract: Effect of Sedation on Child Behavior in the Dental Setting

Purpose: The aim of this cross-sectional study is to assess how dental sedation affects the child behavior in the dental setting and to determine if sedation improves cooperation and protects the patient’s developing psyche.

Methods: Administration of survey questionnaires to parents and providers of patients, 3-18 years old at the time of sedation who are ASA I or II and who received one form of sedation (oral minimal sedation; oral moderate sedation; IVGA/ORGA) within the past 12 months at one of two resident-based clinics. Parents of these patients were surveyed about the patient’s behavior in the dental setting. Provider’s of these patients were surveyed about the patient’s dental setting behavior at a recall examination or post-operative examination. Retrospective chart review was conducted to gather information on patient behavior, the type of sedation, age, gender, and ethnicity. Primary outcome was the child behavior measured retrospectively in the chart review compared with behavior assessed by the provider via the provider survey at the subsequent recall or post-operative exam. Secondary outcome was the comparison of temperament as measured from the parental survey and the provider’s assessment.

Results: Pending

Conclusions: We expect to find there is an improvement in child behavior post sedation with no difference between the form of sedation as reported by provider and parent.
