Abstract:

Purpose: This study aims to determine (1) how many patients at the University of Toledo Pediatric Dental Service had prior general anesthesia (GA) exposure before receiving dental treatment under GA and (2) the number and types of medical or diagnostic procedures requiring general anesthesia prior to dental GA.




Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional chart review was conducted for pediatric patients aged 2–14 years who received dental treatment under general anesthesia. Data collected from electronic medical records included history of prior GA exposure and the type of previous diagnostic or surgical procedures performed. Descriptive analyses were conducted to quantify the proportion of patients with previous GA exposure and to identify the most common non-dental procedures requiring GA.




Results: A total of two hundred patient charts were reviewed. The majority of children (76.5%) had no prior general anesthesia exposure, whereas 23.5% had undergone at least one previous diagnostic or surgical procedure under GA. Among those with prior GA, 72% had only a single medical procedure documented. The most frequent procedures performed under GA were ENT-related surgeries, including tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy and myringotomy with tympanostomy tube placement.




Conclusion: Most pediatric patients receiving dental treatment under GA had no prior history of general anesthesia, indicating that dental surgery commonly represents a child’s first GA experience. When prior GA was documented, the procedures were predominantly ENT-related. These findings provide insight into the medical experiences of children undergoing dental GA.
