Abstract: Dental Management of Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa

Introduction: Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare inherited group of mucocutaneous disorders characterized by fragile mucosa and skin, has many oral manifestations including enamel defects, increased caries susceptibility, soft tissue ulcerations and microstomia. Due to the frequent blistering and erosion of tissues from minor traumas, dental management of patients with EB can present significant challenges in balancing the need to provide optimum oral health care, and avoiding additional trauma to oral tissues.

Case Report: This case report describes the dental management of a 21-year-old female with dystrophic EB. Patient presented to Healthy Smiles for Kids by AltaMed with severe oral soft tissue fragility, limited oral opening, extensive scarring of the oral mucosa, elevated caries risk and multiple broken and carious teeth. Patient has struggled to find a dental provider who could treat their teeth and previous restorations placed are now failing and need to be extracted. This case report will highlight the complex oral health needs of patients with epidermolysis bullosa and the difficulty of patients with special health care needs transitioning to adult care.
