323 - Impact of Preoperative Appointments on Failed General Anesthesia Dental Visits

Abstract:

Purpose: This retrospective study aimed to assess whether implementing preoperative general anesthesia (GA) dental appointments reduces the rate of failed GA dental appointments.

Methods: Data from 147 GA patients treated at Sun Life Pediatric Dentistry (December 2021- November 2022) were analyzed. The study compared failure rates of GA appointments before and after implementing preoperative GA appointments. Attendance at both preoperative and GA appointments was evaluated, along with age and gender distribution.

Results: Among 147 patients, 47 were seen before and 100 after the intervention. Of 63 patients scheduled for preoperative visits, 62 (98%) attended. Despite this high preoperative compliance, 54 of the 147 patients (37%) missed their GA appointment. The average patient age was 4.9 years (SD=1.66), with a near-equal gender split (56% male, 44% female). Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in the failure rates of GA appointments based on preoperative attendance, age, or gender, before or after the intervention.

Conclusion: The introduction of preoperative GA dental appointments led to a 2% reduction in failed GA appointments, but the change was not statistically significant. These findings suggest limited impact, highlighting the need for further research into the underlying causes of missed GA appointments and the potential benefits of preoperative appointments.
